STUDENTS WINTER MEALS.

Hi to all of you! It is the start of a new year of studies, activities and living on a busy campus. You guys have to remember to eat and drink logically. This Sane and Sensible food plan will help you to create a small food corner.

You need nourishment: wholesome foods, fruit and vegetables in season, healthy drinks and supplements

There is very little time to cook so shop carefully for products that are quick to prepare. Oats is a quick and easy breakfast. Simply put a cup of oats and a little salt in a saucepan of two cups of water. Cook on a low flame for ten minutes. You can eat it with honey, raisins, cinnamon, granola and milk. It is a nourishing and satisfying meal.

These are the items you need to keep on hand: Yogurt, buttermilk, milk, cottage cheese, yellow cheese and olives. Have olive oil, grains, rice, pastas and some instant soups. Keep honey instead of sugar. Peanut butter and jams are good for sandwiches. There is a product called MARMITE and I recommend it for a spread on toast and as a hot drink. Just a teaspoon in boiling water is a broth you will enjoy
Soups are easy to make and you can literally throw in all vegetables and some lentils, barley, yellow lentils and chickpeas You need to eat grains, peas, hummus, techina, healthy grain whole-wheat breads, rye bread, rice crackers and whole-wheat pitot and crackers. Look at my former recipes and you will find soups, quinoa, rice and lentil dishes. They are simple to make and are nutritious.

Milk products are necessary and a glass of milk, cottage cheese, yogurts, yellow cheese and cream cheese are great. Do not forget eggs, boiled and make easy protein meals of omelets and pancakes.

Skip sugar pops, junk nibbles and commercial drinks. They do very little for you. Water is the best drink. You can have boiling water in the morning with a squeeze of lemon in it. This is good for the system and cleans the throat. Eliminate caffeine at night and make yourself a hot milk drink with cinnamon and honey in it. Grapefruit is a good winter drink. Squeeze a grapefruit into a tall glass and add a little honey, and boiling water.

Remember to keep your teeth and gums in good condition. Floss daily and rinse the mouth with salt water a few times a week.

Salty snacks, sugary cookies and commercial junk foods are of no value. Eat fresh apples, cucumbers, carrots, fruits in season for winter, like grapefruits, oranges and mandarins. Choose fruits and vegetables with beta carotene, red peppers, carrots, kohlrabi, loads of green herbs, onions and garlic too.

Get into the habit of eating breakfast and taking foods for the mid morning snacks.
Peeled carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery and apples, bananas are great with a chunk of cheese. Easy and fast to do.
You are in charge of your health. Smoking and coffee are trends and style, but not an investment to your health or well being. When you are young, you take your body for granted. Don’t! Eat simply and sanely. You are worth the trouble.
Study well, love what you are doing and put joy into each day.

Good Luck scholars for a New year and great learning, fun and friendships.

NON ALCOHOLIC DRINKS...........USE SANE AND SENSIBLE IDEAS FOR HEALTHY DRINKS

NON ALCOHOLIC DRINKS.......................MAKE A SANE AND SENSIBLE CHOICE............................................

I   glanced at a magazine last week and it was an entire magazine telling you what you could drink in summer. Every one is laced with vodka and jazzed up with alcohol, liquors and more vodka.
Catch a wake up...........................if you are parents ,do not let this be the style or trend in your home. If you are a teenager, be brave enough to say I prefer non alcoholic drinks. That is cool....not to be as fool.
I believe drinking as a social trend is dangerous and totally misunderstood by young people. When an adult drinks a Scotch and takes a brandy.................he knows how and when to drink it.
Youngsters just have no education in this field, have too much money to waste and think it makes them one of the guys..................................what a waste of good body organs and not to discuss what you   show in weakness and a lack of self respect..

FUN...AND SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE.

HERE ARE SOME COOL, TASTY AND EASY TO PREPARE DRINKS FOR SUMMER.

Firstly you need a few jugs, good clean and tall glasses, straws and lots of ice cubes.

ICED TEA....a long time favorite. I make this with tea bags ,some Sunrider Stevia, the natural sweetener, lemon and mint leaves, Serve with crushed ice.
FORTUNE DELIGHT LEMON  is a good and easy choice. Just add a bag to a few glasses of water. The taste and quality  make this  a good choice.

FRUIT PUNCH.
1 liter fruit juice and 500grms of diced fruit you like. Add l liter soda or lemonade. Mix and chill.

CRANBERRY AND PEACHES.
Make a large jug of cranberry juice and add GRATED  peaches or pears and some lemon. Serve cold with lots of crushed ice cubes.

GRAPE JUICE.
This is healthy and delicious. I chill it well and add ice cubes and a few fresh , seeded grapes in the glass.

LEMON JUICE, MINT AND  APPLE JUICE..    Mix one bottle of apple juice,  two tablespoons of lemon juice, and chopped mint. You can add a few chopped raisins as well, Serve in a tall glass with ice cubes that are frozen with extra mint leaves in them. Looks good..

TOMATO JUICE.

Chill the juice and add salt , pepper and a little basil. Grate two cucumbers in this with a little red onion. Chill and serve. For a soup in a cup or glass, you can blend in some Buttermilk or yogurt. Makes a cool soup. As a soup, serve with a spoon of yogurt and chopped parsley or mint.

YOGURT AND CUCUMBER.

Blend two cucumbers and three jars of yogurt. Add salt and pepper and   a few drops  of  soya sauce. Mix well..

GREEN TEA........  A SANE AND SENSIBLE RONA CHOICE.

Take two bags of Green Tea, 5 cloves, 2 small sticks of cinnamon, a few mint leaves and slices of lemon. You can use a few geranium leaves.
Add four cups of water and a few slices of oranges and sliced kumquats. I add a little honey or Stevia.
Boil this all and let simmer for two to three minutes.  Serve hot or cool it and serve with ice. It is terrific.

Look at the blog of 17th September 2008 for great Borscht, Beetroot drink. The blog of  8th August 2008 has some good  COLD SOUPS..

ICED COFFEE,

Lastly the cool drink for summer is iced coffee. You can make it as calorific as you like.  It is good to serve with ice cream or frothy milk. Simply  use one  of those gadgets that makes it all look  whipped up and stylish  in a tall glass with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

Have a SOBER and a cool summer.

 Love and light

Count That Day Lost by George Eliot
If you sit down at set of sun
And count the acts that you have done,
And, counting, find
One self-denying deed, one word
That eased the heart of him who heard,
One glance most kind
That fell like sunshine where it went --
Then you may count that day well spent.

But if, through all the livelong day,
You've cheered no heart, by yea or nay --
If, through it all
You've nothing done that you can trace
That brought the sunshine to one face--
No act most small
That helped some soul and nothing cost --
Then count that day as worst than lost.

---------------------------------------------------
I believe that with very little effort, you can change the day for some one else.
It could be a smile, a friendly word, a helping hand,
a cup of coffee--, a walk in the park.  or just to visit a lonely soul.
What ever you do , do it with a good attitude,
a positive way, a smile and let the light shine through.

Love and light, Rona
